Spend enough time in the woods, and you’ll quickly realize deer are very opportunistic animals. They’ll browse on just about anything they come across in the woods or field that’ll go toward their daily routine of filling their stomach. Plants, crops, grass, acorns, fruit, and much more make up their normal diet.

However, you don’t normally see “snake” on the list of items a deer will eat. But, you can now add it to the never-ending list of things a whitetail deer will turn into a meal.

Check it out in the video below…

Why Would a Deer Eat a Snake?

So why would a deer eat a snake? The short answer – it’s hungry. Again, they’ll eat about anything that’ll meet their dietary needs, meat included. They’ve been known to eat insects, small mammals, and even birds.

The National Geographic says that deer might exhibit carnivorous behavior in search of essential minerals such as phosphorus, salt, and calcium, particularly during the winter season when plant availability is limited. This adaptation allows them to compensate for the nutrient deficiencies they may experience in their herbivorous diet.

Or maybe they’re just young, curious and willing to turn most anything they come across into a snack. We honestly shouldn’t be too surprised when we encounter wild animals doing wild things
