Will You Always Have the Right to Hunt?

By Brodie SwisherJune 2, 2015

For many of us, hunting is more than just a sport or a hobby. It is truly a way of life. It’s as natural to us as eating and sleeping. It’s what we do. So try to imagine for a moment that you live in beautiful, lush surroundings with thriving wildlife, but your access to hunting and fishing is almost non-existent. Why? Because those activities are reserved only for the high-society elite and privileged landowners and because the wildlife is owned – yes, owned – by either the monarchy or government of your country. It’s a nightmare, isn’t it? It is also the reality of people living in many other parts of the globe, like the United Kingdom, China, France, and most of Africa.  In these countries you do not have the guaranteed right to hunt.

Things are different here in the land we live. In the United States, we are blessed to live under the tenants of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation (NMWC), which states that all wildlife is held in the public trust and cannot be owned by individuals or organizations. Even better, in 2010, the Federation helped pass an amendment to the Tennessee state constitution that guarantees your personal right to hunt and fish. Our rich heritage as a people who cherish and engage with the Great Outdoors is secure.

With much excitement, the Tennessee Wildlife Federation recently announced the launch of their new outreach campaign, Tennessee’s Wildlife is Your Wildlife (TWYW). This group believes that Tennessee’s wildlife is, indeed, YOUR wildlife. It is the responsibility of each of us to act as careful stewards of this, one of God’s most precious gifts to humanity.

The staff at the Tennessee Wildlife Federation has created a custom infographic that makes the complicated subject of conservation easy to understand. Be sure to share it with your friends, family, and other outdoor enthusiasts so they can better grasp where we are with wildlife, and how we can be better stewards of what God has blessed us with.

You can also check out the TWYW website to learn more about how conservation works in America. And if you’d like to make a donation to support one of God’s greatest natural resources, be sure to support the TWYW with a financial gift at their website. http://www.tnwf.org/yours
