A tragic story out of Florida is gripping the hunting community as a teenage girl has died after being struck by lightning while hunting with her dad on Tuesday.

Baylee Holbrook, 16, and her dad were hit after lightning struck a tree late Tuesday afternoon, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said. Holbrook’s dad lost consciousness. When he woke up, Holbrook wasn’t breathing and was in critical condition.

He called 911 and started providing CPR as emergency personnel responded, officials said. The teen was rushed to a hospital for additional treatment where she was stabilized before being transferred to a trauma center. Sadly, Holbrook died two days later from her injuries.

Trinity Baptist Church shared the heartbreaking update of her death, writing:  ‘At 9.32 this morning, Baylee Holbrook entered into the arms of Jesus….Matt, Casey and Kylee are grateful for the outpouring of love and support. We ask that you please respect the privacy of the family at this time.’

Before Baylee’s death, the Putnam County School District said in a Facebook post on Wednesday that students joined to pray for her on “See You at the Pole” day, an annual national event recognized as a time for student-led prayer.

“We stand with our community in support of Baylee,” the school district added.

Baylee’s father is recovering from his injuries and is expected to be okay.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Holbrook family following this devastating situation.
