Bowhunter Attacked by Black Bear

How would you handle a bear attack? Have you ever given it much thought? We’re often quick to judge others in the way they handle a crisis situation, but what if we found ourselves in the hot seat?

The video below shows a bowhunter along the side of a dirt road with a black bear making its approach. There’s nothing between the man and the bear, other than a small pile of logs. Watch what happens as the bear closes in on the hunter.

The man quietly waits as the bear comes down the road in his direction. He’s hunting with a recurve bow and has an arrow nocked and ready to roll. The problem is, the bear is walking directly at the hunter. It’s not the shot opportunity you’re looking for; particularly when hunting with a recurve bow.

As the bear walks to within the danger zone, the man finally grunts and shouts to let the bear know he’s there. However, instead of running away, the bear charges the hunter. The man goes from grunting to shouting, then finally screaming at the bear, with no luck at deterring its approach. And it’s no bluff charge! The bear closes in on the hunter and tackles him to the ground.

Surprisingly, the attack was over as quick as it started, leaving the man with nothing more than shaken nerves and a bruised elbow. He walked away from the incident while acknowledging on camera what he should have done.

“I shoulda shot him a long time ago,” he says as he regains his composure.

Again, it’s easy to say all the woulda, shoulda, coulda scenarios after the fact, but what would you have done? How would you have reacted in this situation?
