This Northern Illinois monarch has been giving a few hunters the run around over the years. He is smart, and knows his home area well making him very hard to have an opportunity at.

Big body. Thick neck. Loose skin. Deep chest. If those characteristics didn’t do it alone, the potbelly sure does. This deer screams 6.5-year-old, or even potentially older to me.

I'm torn - he almost looks like he could be three. But his rack says otherwise. So I'm going 4. Doesn't look like a big enough head/neck/front shoulder to be 5.

I think this buck is 5.5 years old. In 2020 his body looks rectangular, doesn't appear long legged like a 3.5 year old would and his neck transitions seamlessly to his brisket. This leads me to believe that he was 4.5 years old then. The tricky part is that he looks nearly identical the following year. But because of the previous years evidence I will stick with my initial estimate - 5.5 year old
