As luck turns out not only am I losing one of my best spots to agriculture expansion, my most productive hunting ground is currently being clear cut by the Amish. They started felling trees back in January and at the time I figured they would long be done before our late September archery opener. As it turns out, I would say they are only half done timbering the land and my bow opener is around 9 weeks away. It appears they will still be in there come archery season.
I really had hopped that they would be out at least a month or so before the season opened to allow the deer some time to move back on the land without the human, horse, saw and skidder intrusion. I know there are deer in and out of the property even with them working the timber, but I have a hard time envisioning a mature buck sauntering around during daylight hours once the archery opener rolls around with them still timbering.
As much as I hated to see such a beautiful set of woods thrased into a barren landscape of treetops and rutted up skidder trails, I do look forward to the new challenge of hunting this suddenly unfamiliar property. It’s going to be an all new world there now, but I am up for the challenge!
