World Record Shed Antler – One Year Later

Like many bowhunters, I’m a fanatic about big whitetails.  I try to keep up with the latest big bucks that are taken each fall and the latest big shed antlers that are found each spring.  Last year was the first time I heard that someone here in Northern Illinois had found a massive whitetail shed that was officially scored as the largest 5 point typical shed in history.  Shed hunting is extremely competitive in this area and with multiple 200 inch sets picked up each spring in this area it’s no wonder why.  I poked around the Internet for awhile before I finally came up with this photo of the buck, found on the North American Shed Hunter Association’s website.  To say I was impressed would be an understatement!  That is one HUGE antler!

The official world record 5 point shed, picked up in the spring of 2008 in Northern Illinois.

Fast forward a year to this spring and I’m sure there was more than one shed hunter in the area hoping to pick up this bucks’s antlers.  As fate would have it, Bowhunting.com member and friend of ours Rich Music just so happened to be that lucky guy.  While out scouting a new hunting spot Rich picked up the giant buck’s right antler.  Rich immediately knew he had someething special on his hands and spent the next several days trying to locate the match.  Rich was unsuccessful at finding the other side, and as fate would have it another shed hunter did pick up the other side just several days later.

Rich was able to meet up with this other shed hunter, who chooses to remain anonymous, and get some pictures of these incredible whitetail antlers.  At well over 200 inches this buck could very well be a new world record typical if he can be harvested by a hunter this fall.  Rich is determined to find this buck come October and if all goes right, you may be seeing him here with not just one antler, but the whole buck!  Congratulations to Rich on an amazing find!
