Hello,I stream bowhunting.com, and I’m looking forward to episode eight being posted. Here’s my question:The only thing I’ve ever hunted was doves and I wasn’t very good at it. I would love to hunt deer someday but I really don’t have anyone to go with to show me the ropes. Why is it, that after you successfully hit a deer with your arrow, that you sit up there in the stand and whisper even after you’ve seen the deer hit the ground? You sit up there and whisper and cheer and then it isn’t till dark when you get down out of the tree to go find your deer. This doesn’t make any sense to me, but then again I’ve never hunted dear. To me, You successfully hit your deer with the arrow, you watch him hit the deck, and then you get down off the tree and get him!Tag him, drag him out, and go home and dress him.Why the whispering in the tree until nightfall, when it’s the hardest to find him? Thanks for your time. I hope you can answer this directly via email because I have no idea when you’re going to answer letters on the program. Honestly, I fast forward through all that talk anyway just to see the hunting action.Take care,Mike

I can't speak for everyone out there but speaking for myself, if I see the deer go down in sight I usually wait a couple of minutes to collect myself, and enjoy the scenery before getting down to retrieve the animal. In some rare occasions I will leave to wait for a friend or maybe go grab my kids so they can tag along on the recovery. If the animal is down and you know where it's at, there's no real down side to leaving it for a little while, and it's a lot more fun to recover your trophy with your friends and family than it is on your own. With all of that said, if I DON'T see the animal go down but I'm confident I made a lethal shot or heard it expire out of sight, I will make a point to get down and start the recovery before it gets dark if I can. Even if I come back after finding the animal to remove it later, I will make every effort possible to recover it while it's light outside. Tracking after dark is never easy, no matter how good the hit or blood trail.
