What You Need to Clean Your Turkey Spurs
The items you need to clean your turkey spurs are pretty simple and can likely be found around your home. Here’s a quick list of the items you’ll need to get started:
- Knife
- Saw
- Super Glue
- Clear Nail Polish
- Peroxide
Quick and Easy Steps to Clean Turkey Spurs
- Begin by using a saw to cut the spur section of the leg away from the rest of the leg.
- Use a knife to cut skin away from bone.
- Boil in water to soften things up. This will allow you to remove the spur cap from the spur in a simple twist-and-pull motion.
- After removing the spur cap, return the bone/spur to the boiling water a little longer.
- You can now remove the spurs from the water and use the knife to clean/scrape any extra skin from the bone.
- Starting with a fresh pot water, add a cup of peroxide and return the spurs back into boiling peroxide for the next 10-20 minutes for the whitening process.
- After boiling in peroxide, remove the spurs and let them dry on a paper towel.
- Once dry you can use the super glue to glue spur caps back onto the spur.
- Use the polish to add a little shine and sheen to the spur, and use a Sharpie to add a date or caption to the bone to preserve the memory.
