Family Dog Killed With Bow

By Brodie SwisherOctober 15, 202112 Comments

A Minnesota family is in shock over the loss of their dog, Reba, who was recently shot and killed by a hunter on a neighboring property.

The dog was a Great Pyrenees that was said to be a protector of the family farm. Dan Swanson, the dog’s owner, said the dog was chasing off a predator when it ventured off the family property. It was a normal routine for the dog, however, she normally circled back around to the Swanson’s home. This time was different. This time, the dog never returned.

A short while later, a neighbor stopped by the house to notify Swanson that he had witnessed the dog’s killing. The neighbor had been hunting when he witnessed another hunter shoot and kill the dog.

The other hunter was Ben Schroeder. Schroeder was hunting a neighboring farm and says the dog was chasing deer when he shot and killed it with his bow.

He went on to say that it was a split-second decision that he knows was wrong and now regrets. Schroeder and his family have apologized to the Swanson family for his  actions.

The Swanson family hopes it will find justice. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said it’s assisting the Carver County Sheriff’s Office by taking the case. A department spokesman said it’s an open investigation and that he couldn’t offer more details at this time.

What are your thoughts on such an incident? Some would say such actions should be against the law, while others lean towards it being justified because the dog had ventured onto the neighbor’s property.
