A 38-year-old bowhunter sitting in a hard-sided ground blind in Clinton County, Michigan, was critically injured Saturday evening when a stray bullet from nearby target practice struck him in the chest.

Deputies with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on Lowe Road in Essex Township, roughly 30 miles north of Lansing, at 5:50 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3. Upon arrival, first responders located the wounded bowhunter inside his blind suffering from a single gunshot wound.

According to initial reports from the Sheriff’s Office, a group on an adjacent property was target shooting when an errant round left their backstop area, traveled across property lines, and penetrated the hunter’s blind.

The hunter was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The incident is currently being investigated as an isolated accident by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office alongside the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
