New Bows for 2014

By Hunting NetworkMarch 15th, 20216 Comments

In the market for a new bow? Here are some good ones to consider in the coming year. I am beginning to see a trend in modern compounds; ones of shootability over raw speed. Sure, every company still has its hotrod model, the 350 fps-plus platforms offering the most impressive IBO numbers in the industry. But many more models seem to have been designed for accuracy and forgiveness, and sacrificing just a bit of speed in the process. Heck, even speed king BowTech toned the 2012-year-model Insanity down a tad to create the 2013 Experience, giving up a little speed for a bow that is much more pleasant to shoot. Silence also seems to drive the market today, most new models holding silencing technologies that make these fast bows quieter than we could have only imagined a decade ago. With those trends in mind, here are some of 2014’s most intriguing new bow models:

Mathews

The Creed XS is offered in 50, 60 or 70 pound peak weights and draw lengths from 26.5 through 29.5, in half-inch increments. GeoGridLock Riser gives the bow its handsome lines, a virtual honeycomb look that makes the bow lightweight but rigid, and holding Harmonic Dampers beneath each limb pocket. Preloaded limbs include parallel geometry for quieter shots and less felt recoil on release, and the Reverse Assist Roller Guard eliminating torque at full draw while also helping create a quieter shot. The CenterLine walnut grip promotes repeatable hand placement shot after shot. The Creed XS is in Lost Camo and black finishes.

PSE DNA SP Bow

Pete Shepley’s Tucson-based bow company has been delivering the goods since 1971, the 2014 DNA SP (MSRP $900) yet another example of that company’s expertise in producing fast yet forgiving compound bows. The original DNA was all about speed, but PSE listened when customers asked for a little softer draw. SP stands for Smooth Pull, but this DNA still retains the lightweight and speedy nature of former models.

The machined-aluminum riser provides a wide base for the past-parallel limbs and a slim, comfortable grip helping to eliminate shot torque. The DNA SP is offered in draw lengths from 24.5 to 30 inches and peak draw weights of 50, 65, 60 and 70 pounds. PSE DNA SP Bow

It isn’t called the Full Throttle for nothing. In fact, this is arguable the fastest bow on the planet. However, PSE engineers didn’t just set out to make a fast bow, they also wanted to make a fast shootable bow. And, according to them, the Full Throttle is just that bow. Thrusting arrows at an amazing 370 fps, 1 pin setups at extended ranges are actually possible with this bow. When it comes to a bow this fast, it really needs to be shot in order to get a “real world” feel for it. Obviously this bow won’t be for everyone; especially novice shooters. Still, PSE has made a real barn-burner and if speed is your thing—-this just might be your bow. Color options include Mossy Oak Infinity, Solid Black and Skullworks camo.

The system also has remarkably smooth drawing for a cam this fast, and includes a rotating module to accommodate draw lengths from 25.5 to 30 inches in ½-inch increments.

Accuracy and shootability are accentuated through advanced, milled-aluminum riser technology that evenly distributes limb loads (and contributes to its feathery 3.9 pounds), Hinge Guard cable-guard system that reduces lateral loads and torque and Zero Tolerance Limb Pockets. Silencing technologies like rubber riser inserts, Max-Preload Quad Limbs and new Bi-Dimensionally Adjustable Offset top and bottom string suppressors make the 32-inch Agenda 6 remarkably quiet for a bow this fast. For starters the brace height is more forgiving and the draw length will now accommodate long-draw shooters. Additional similarities include the smooth draw cycle and forgiving valley of 3800 DualSync series as well as the companies draw stop modules which allow shooters to tweak the amount of cam let-off to match their precise shooting style.
