For many years, we have heard that the first cold front of October can be a great time to kill a big buck. But how many bowhunters have actually done it? Some people think it’s all a bunch of hearsay.
This year, however, has some nonbelievers thinking there may be some merit to the first cold front of October lore.
With temps dropping upwards of 30 degrees from the first few days of October heading into the first full weekend of the month, our social media feeds began filling up with pictures of giant bucks hitting the ground. Here are a few of the more notable bucks taken during this October’s first major cold front.
The cooler temperatures had this Illinois monster on its feet checking scrapes, and Ben was able to capitalize on what he believes is his biggest buck to date! Â
There’s not much to really say other than this is what bowhunting dreams are made of! We are all excited to watch the story unfold for a giant suburban buck named “Kimbo”.
It is impossible to say whether this first cold front of October was the sole reason that these deer were harvested, however, you would be standing on a very small island if you believe that the cold front didn’t at least play a part in these mature beasts being up on their feet during daylight hours so early in October.
The bottom line is this, we know changes in weather patterns can get mature deer on their feet. Hunting that first major cold front of the year doesn’t have to be the entire use of vacation time or sick days, but if you have the ability to sit in a tree, DO IT, you may just have the buck of your dreams come strolling past you.
