Archery Innovations: The Anchor Sight

By Josh SturgillSeptember 23, 2012

LAST UPDATED: May 1st, 2015

The morning started off like any other Saturday in August. My trusty alarm clock, A.K.A my black lab, went into action at daylight; which was an hour earlier than I actually needed or wanted him to. After failing to push the snooze button, which consists of telling the dog to wake up my wife, I finally decided to give in. Slowly, I made my way to the front door and stepped outside to greet the morning. To my surprise, the stifling heat of August had seemed to disappear overnight. In its place was something that felt like a cold October morning!
As goose bumps began to rise on my skin and every neuron in my body started firing like a child’s race track at Christmas, I realized hunting season was just around the corner. Just like the environmental cues that cause ducks to migrate south for the winter, I felt the immediate urge to head down to the local bow shop and start preparing for the upcoming archery season.
While there, one product in particular caught my eye. It was the Anchor Sight by Archery Innovations. As it turns out, I knew a little about the product. Recently, I got to spend some time with Randy Baker; one of the partners in Archery Innovations. During the course of our conversation I learned a lot about this outstanding product. Here’s what I discovered.

Q: How did Archery Innovations get its start?

A: We have three individuals that are the owners of Archery Innovations. Lynn Asher actually created the anchor site ten years ago, and I have been shooting it ever since. The goal in creating this company was to improve accuracy in low light situations. Lynn actually started his career as a trouble shooting project engineer, so solving this problem was second nature to him.

Q: How is Archery Innovations different than other archery equipment companies that are out there today?

A: We are different because we have an Anchor Sight and other companies do not. We specialize in bow accuracy; our main goal is to make people feel more comfortable and confident with their shots. We give people more options in the way they feel most comfortable shooting, whether it is with one eye open or both. Ultimately, our goal is to provide the tools to make our customers more accurate and in turn more successful in the field.

The Anchor Sight is a revolutionary bow sighting accessory that allows you shoot more quickly and consistently than when using a traditional peep sight.

Q: I understand that there are three company owners, but how many are actually involved in the day to day operations of Archery Innovations.

A: All three of us are very involved in the business. I handle the marketing end and my involvement with hunting shows like Mathews’ Dominant Bucks TV and Whitetail Slam helps tremendously in that aspect of the company. Lynn Asher is the inventor of the Anchor Sight and is responsible for product development. Lastly, Chris Matzke handles all of the internal operational components of the business.

Q: What is the one thing about Archery Innovations that the public does not know, but needs to know?

A: Customer service…plain and simple. It is the one thing that we strive for and our current customers tell us that is one of the big reasons they like us so much. We want to treat everyone as if they are our only customer. We never want anyone to feel as if they are just a number when they contact us. Our goal is to make sure that our customers get everything they need, everything they paid for, and that we provide this service in a very prompt manner. We will do whatever it takes to make sure our customer service is second to none.

Q: How was the concept of the Anchor Sight born?

A:  The problem that was identified very early on was the lack of ability to find the peep sight in low light or the inability to find your target once you found your peep sight. We really wanted to develop a product that opened the range of view for every archer. We wanted this application for low light scenarios that you may find in a blind or early morning/late evening in the stand when deer movement is highest but available light for a traditional peep sight is at its lowest. We also wanted to increase the confidence that shooters have in those scenarios.

Q: Can you explain how this product works?

A: For starters the product will mount to your bow. Some people like it above their current sight; some (like me) prefer it below their front sight. Once you are at full draw, you can see the Anchor Sight in your peripheral vision. The purpose of the product is to ensure that every time you draw back your bow you come to the same anchor point.
When you are looking at the Anchor Sight, the view is similar to a rifle sight; a black ring with a red dot. Once the red dot is perfectly aligned in the circle, you are at the correct anchor point. The great thing about the Anchor Sight is that it gives you the opportunity to see if you are torquing the bow left, right, up or down and then correct it before releasing the arrow.

The Anchor Sight is small but built to be tough and reliable.

Q: What challenges did you face while creating the Anchor Sight?

A: The biggest problem we had to overcome while creating this product was the micro-adjustments. We had to figure out how to adjust it on the micro level. We also had to make sure the product was universal, so that it would be compatible with any sight or any bow on the market. We also had to make sure that it was very user friendly. Looking at the finished product, I am confident we have overcome all of those obstacles and have produced a truly wonderful product.

Q: How long did it take Archery Innovations to develop the Anchor Sight?

A: I actually started shooting one of the early prototypes before I was involved with the company. They gave me one to try out and to see what I thought about it. After using it, I wanted to be more involved because I thought it was such a good product. After that, it took probably two to three years before it we had a marketable product.

Q: If I walked into a bow shop today, how long would it take to get the Anchor Sight on my bow and shooting accurately?

A: Everybody is a little different. Some people like to put their own equipment on. Whether you install it or a pro-shop employee puts it on for you, it should only take 10 to 15 minutes to get it mounted and shooting correctly. In fact, I recently took the Anchor Sight to one of our local bow shop owners that was a pretty good shot to begin with, and he had the Anchor Sight installed in five minutes. More importantly, within a total of ten minutes he shrunk a baseball sized group down to a quarter sized group with all of this arrows touching. That is how quickly this product can make a difference in your shooting accuracy.

Q: What if I buy the Anchor Sight and I have problems getting it mounted and working?

A: Actually, before this interview, I was talking to a customer in Michigan who had purchased the Anchor Sight because he has Macular Degeneration and could no longer see through a traditional peep sight. He had some questions about the set-up and the micro adjustments. We worked with him and before we got off the phone he was ready to go. Every customer will be taken care of until they are satisfied.

Q:How does this product perform in harsh weather?

A: It does great! It is made of aluminum, so there are no issues with rusting. We also created a fix for some lens fogging problems we encountered. As a result, that does not happen now. On a personal note, I killed the biggest buck of my life last year in the rain. So, as far as I am concerned, it is a great performer in bad weather.

The Anchor Sight was trusted to take down this bull Elk.

Q:How will this product make someone a better hunter?

A: If I could only use one word, it would be confidence. Once you start shooting with this product, you will notice an immediate effect on your accuracy. With that accuracy, you will gain more confidence in your shooting ability. That will only lead to in the woods; regardless of any shot you are presented with.

Q: What is the one thing about this product that you want everyone to remember?

A: The simplicity of set-up and what a difference it will make in your shooting and overall bowhunting success.
