HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The 2013 Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show has been postponed indefinitely. Reed Exhibitions, which organizes the show, says it made the decision after controversy surrounding its decision to limit the sale or display of military style assault weapons and high magazine clips. As of Wednesday, over 200 vendors had pulled out of the show. A Facebook page dedicated to boycotting the show currently has over 18,000 fans.

In a statement, Reed Exhibitions said the decision came after it became clear the event would no longer be able to provide the family enjoyment it was meant to.  “It is unfortunate that in the current emotionally charged atmosphere this celebratory event has become overshadowed by a decision that directly affected a small percentage of more than 1,000 exhibits showcasing products and services for those interested in hunting and fishing,” wrote Chet Burchett, Reed ‘s President for the Americas, in a statement.

The show was scheduled to take place February 2-10 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. The full statement from Reed Exhibitions is below:

“Our original decision not to include certain products in the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show this year was made in order to preserve the event’s historical focus on the hunting and fishing traditions enjoyed by American families,” said Chet Burchett, Reed Exhibitions President for the Americas. “In the current climate, we felt that the presence of MSRs would distract from the theme of hunting and fishing, disrupting the broader experience of our guests. This was intended simply as a product decision, of the type event organizers need to make every day.

“It has become very clear to us after speaking with our customers that the event could not be held because the atmosphere of this year’s show would not be conducive to an event that is designed to provide family enjoyment. It is unfortunate that in the current emotionally charged atmosphere this celebratory event has become overshadowed by a decision that directly affected a small percentage of more than 1,000 exhibits showcasing products and services for those interested in hunting and fishing. “ESS has long been proud to participate in the preservation and promotion of hunting and fishing traditions, and we hope that as the national debate clarifies, we will have an opportunity to consider rescheduling the event when the time is right to focus on the themes it celebrates.”

  1. Hope they aren't the only ones that got the message. Don't mess with this constituency.

  2. AR's are used in hunting! My wife took a deer this year with one! People are shot with handguns every day….they generally are not used for hunting…..are they next?

  3. Three years ago Reed solicited for vendors to bring any type of fire arm to the show for the vendor to sell and for Reed to attract more busines.. Now they are saying the AR's and the AK's aren't conducive to the show and are not targeted. Who do those anti gun idiot's think they are fooling. They must be part of Oblama's cabinet. And to the foolish people that think these types of guns aren't used for hunting, well you better take another look at some of the other states hunting guidelines. They are perfectly legal in some states.

  4. Maryland Hunter says:

The Evil Black Rifles were not used in the Sandy Hook shooting, are used in very few crimes, and should not be targeted as they have been. Many people hunt with ARs as well.
Hunters need to wake up if they think that these attacks won't affect them, only handguns and ARs. Open your eyes and join the fight, or lose your rights. It's coming.

  5. There's a whole lot of other things going on @ this show besides guns.Outfitters from all over the world come to this show. This is BS!

  6. Good.

  7. mick howard says:

i am a hunter and sportsman and applaud you for what you tried to do. the ar's are not used for hunting and out of respect for the families that lost children in the horrendous shooting it was a proper gesture.
    sorry you lost your show.

  8. When reintroducing the “assault weapon” ban, Senator Feinstein said, “The purpose is to dry up the supply of these weapons over time,”…. This is like saying the United States should dismantle all of it’s nuclear weapons and then wait until the evil countries in the world run out of theirs…..after which time, the world will be a much safer place for all…. How long were the Europeans willing to wait for Hitler to run out of bullets? Has the supply of weapons dried up for the drug cartels in Mexico? (aside from our federal government…!) But they only want to legislate “reasonable” gun control…”Reasonable” according to who? The President, who has armed security 24/7? Security that DOES NOT have a restriction on their firearms or their magazine capacity? Is 7 or 10 rounds “reasonable” to a rancher in Arizona or Texas who has drug cartels roaming across his property? Is it reasonable to a resident of an inner city, who is surrounded by gangs, to not have a semi-automatic firearm? I

  9. conitnued: am so sick of the hypocrisy from these liberal, freedom haters…they don’t even bother to hide it anymore and they still get away with it! I bet the gun grabbers don’t think it is “fair” for a victim to “out-gun” their attacker or their oppressor either. i.e. – A victim of violent crime should only be able to defend themselves against a knife attack with another knife…we wouldn’t want to violate the criminals’ rights…. I disagree with this warped line of thought. If you find yourself in a “fair” fight, your tactics suck and there’s a “fair” chance you will end up dead! “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” – Wayne LaPierre “…hopefully a bigger one!” – Me

  10. continued: “Feinstein’s office says the bill will grandfather in weapons legally owned before enactment and exempt more than 900 “specifically named weapons” for hunting or sporting purposes”….. NEWS FLASH – the 2nd Amendment does not mention, nor was it added to the Constitution for “hunting or sporting purposes”! It very clearly and simply recognizes a God-given right to self defense that “shall not be infringed”. Amendment II. A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. I took an oath to protect the Constitution of the United States of America and I will not comply! Any law that violates our constitutional rights is not a law, it’s tyranny! I will not comply! If they pass this blatant assault on our Constitution, they will turn millions of other-wise law abiding Americans into criminals with the swipe of a pen. And we all know it won’t stop there. P.S. – The government can’t keep

  11. continued: cigarettes, drugs, or weapons out of prisons, how the hell do they think they can do better in a free society? Hint…they get rid of the free society! Listen to history, it speaks volumes…and it’s getting louder!

  12. Mike The American says:

    From the World Health Organization:
The latest Murder Statistics for the world:
    Murders per 100,000 citizens
    Honduras 91.6
    El Salvador 69.2
    Coted'lvoire 56.9
    Jamaica 52.2
    Venezuela 45.1
    Belize 41.4
    US Virgin Islands 39.2
    The United States 4.2
ALL the countries above America have 100% gun bans

  13. Todd Browning says:

The 2nd has nothing to do with hunting rights. It's about the rights we have in defending ourselves and our property from a tyrannical govt. AR's are used in hunting, a few guys I work with hunt coyotes with them. I personnaly do not own one but will not support any law that regulates them. We need to wake up and stop allowing "lawmakers" to conjure up laws to limit our freedoms. Just because it is law doesn't make it right. We need to stand up for everyone who hunts, or shoots. One day those smae unamerican citizens will be coming for something you like to do. I don't like to coon hunt. But when their rights are threatened, I will be there. Strength in numbers gentlemen, and peace through superior firepower.

  14. Mick Howard just wait until the gun grabbers come for your scoped rifle because it looks like a sniper rifle our military uses. The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting

  15. The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with hunting. AR15 is not an M4 assault rifle. It sucks that some vendors buisnes were hurt because they couldn't attend and sell product however it is time to take a stand as free constitution believing Americans. I give props to the companies who pulled out and took a stand. Don't let the idiots in the whitehouse use a tragedy to steal our rights as law abiding citizens. The only way you get and keep freedom is to fight for it. Sitting back and doing nothing gets you know where.

  16. Hammers kill more people than guns each year. Do we have to ban those too?

  17. Scott Anderson says:

I read an article that I found a link to on the outdoor (a awesome website may I add) that was very interesting on this very subject I did not know that Reed exhibitions was not an american company. This threw up a red flag to me why does a british company run outdoor shows here! I am so glad as a sportsman that all those vendors and other sportsman stood for what we believe in I hope the message is heard in Washington. I do feel for those impacted by the loss of the show and hope that an american company can take over and start putting on outdoor shows for americans.

  18. William Jordan says:

Thanks to the anti gun people, their are 10 times more ARs sold in the last few months than ever before. Some times we have to get reminded to fight for our gun rights.
