After six years of trying, Todd Reich, boss man for Dead Center Archery, finally drew a limited mountain lion permit for the state of Montana. It would be a long, cross-country haul from Pennsylvania to Montana, but he was eager to finally have the chance to hit the mountain in search of a big cat.
When the season finally arrived, Reich and his wife, Lana, headed west in early December with plans to hunt with Cody Carr of Cody Carr Hunting Adventures in Northwest Montana.
For many, a cat hunt seems like a dream hunt. However, the reality is, hunting mountain lions is nothing short of brutal physical labor.
Reich’s hunt was a classic mountain lion hunting grind. It certainly did not come easy. In fact, it wasn’t until Day 4 that the opportunity would unfold for Reich to make his move.
“It was the most challenging thing I’ve done with a bow,” says Reich. “We walked 1.25 miles in some seriously challenging terrain, snow and ice, to get to the cat.”
When the hunt finally wrapped up, Reich had killed a hefty 4 1/2 year-old lion that weighed in at 140 pounds.
Reich was shooting his Mathews VXR bow loaded with Dead Center gear to kill his long awaited mountain lion in Montana.
