Chris and Eric heading to one of their farms the morning of the 22nd where they had been watching some birds roost each night. After an uneventful morning the duo headed to Eric's Diamond Farm to see if any longbeards were out strutting in the fields. Eric had taken a bird off of this farm two days prior so they did not have very high hopes. That changed when they pulled up and saw two longbeards strutting 300 yds away. They eased the truck down the hill got out and set up a game plan.
Because of the open fields they could not get any closer to the birds so it was time to make some magic happen. Chris crawled out into the field and put the decoy Gertrude out hoping that would entice the birds in. Eric grew up hunting in an old home place with his dad on this farm and the turkey and deer are accustomed to it. They have taken numerous deer out of the old house but never any turkeys. Hey, it was worth a shot so they climbed through the window and the hunt was on. Chris says he called and they would gobble, he called and they gobbled more, but would not come in. Eric decided to go to the back of the house and call to make them think the hen was leaving. Brother that's what did it.
Both longbeards came in on a string and strutted the entire way in. Chris let the birds circle the decoy for four minutes before releasing his Piledriver arrow. The shot was true at 25 yards and the bird was down 10 yds from the decoy. A Va. longbeard was down, taken with a bow out of an old homeplace and called in from 300 yds. Sweet hunt.
