Last week the Boone and Crockett Club announced that the largest pronghorn ever recorded had been officially certified as the new world record.

The incredible buck was taken by hunter Mike Gallo in Socorro County, New Mexico in 2013, measuring an almost unbelievable 96-4/8 inches. The Gallo buck breaks the two former world record pronghorns by a full one-and-a-half inch. Both former record animals came from Arizona, and both scored an even 95 inches.

Lucky hunter, Mike Gallo, poses with the largest pronghorn ever taken. The coveted Boone and Crockett Club now recognizes the 2013 kill as the new world record.

According to B&C officials, the inch-and-a-half difference that exists between the Gallo buck and the former records is a huge jump. “Records reflect success in big-game conservation,” stated Richard Hale, chairman of the Club’s Records of North American Big Game Committee in a recent press release. “Remember, the pronghorn was once nearly lost, much like the bison, until sportsmen led an era of wildlife recovery. Now the species is flourishing. And the fact that such incredible specimens exist today says a lot about how far we have come, and how bright the future might be.”

In fact, the inch and a half gap between the Gallo buck and the former records is now the largest gap among all 3,400 trophy pronghorns ever entered into the B&C records program.

Gallo’s record setting buck had more than 23 inches of mass on each side. The right horn length measured 18-3/8 inches with a 7 inch prong while the left sported 18-4/8 inches in length with a 6-5/8 inch prong.

Among favorite western states to hunt pronghorns, New Mexico ranks second in B&C entries with 627 animals. Wyoming leads all western states with 1,154 entries.
