The ‘Motor-city Madman’, Ted Nugent, announced his official endorsement of Mitt Romney as Republican candidate for president via tweet earlier this month:

“After a long heart & soul conversation with Mitt Romney, I concluded this good man will properly represent we the people & I endorsed him.”

However, Romney wasn’t his first choice. In a recent interview with the Texas Tribune Uncle Ted stated, “If the real Rick Perry had been at those debates, he would still be in the race. It is my firm belief that Rick Perry would have [made] and would make the best president we could choose.”

“Whatever occurred at those early debates that caused the real Rick Perry to take a back seat to whoever that was literally caused my wife to cry,” Nugent continued. “We thought, ‘Has he been advised by idiots?’ To this day, we still don’t know what happened.”

Nugent is endorsing Romney as GOP candidate for the upcoming presidential race.

Before fully endorsing Romney, who just barely beat out Republican candidate Rick Santorum in Michigan (Nugent and Romney’s home state) primary on February 28th, Ted insisted that he pledge there would be no new gun legislation or infringements on Second Amendment rights if elected.

In 2004, then Massachusetts governor, Romney signed off on an assault weapons ban, the first in U.S. history. During this same time, his administration increased fees on gun owners by 400%.

According to Ted, “He was in Massachusetts, he wasn’t in America.”

Nugent also told Romney about the “out of control” U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, adding, “These are not Ted Nugent demands,” he said. “They’re logic demands. They’re ‘we the people’ demands. They’re right over wrong, good over bad.”

While it was unclear in the interview why Nugent declared the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service “out of control”, speculation is that it could have manifested from his 2010 conviction on misdemeanor charges for deer-baiting while filming for his television show “Spirit of the Wild” in California.

Nugent summed up his position on the GOP and the state of the country with:

“Basically, America is in a suicidal tailspin right now. Our government is out of control. The power abuse, the corruption, the insanity of spending money that will never exist… The conclusion based on all the evidence I can find is that Mitt Romney has the best shot at bringing the U.S. Constitution, common sense, and the American way back to the White House.”
