Keeping Busy During The Off-Season

Since deer hunting season ended over 2 months ago I have certainly been keeping busy.  Between the ATA Show in January, maintaining and operating our upland hunting club, looking for shed antlers, starting preparations for my food plots and raising a two year old, I'm surprised I can even keep my head on straight.  Thankfully the weather is warming up and spring is almost here which means one thing - deer season will be here before you know it.

I recently purchased a Polaris Ranger for running errands around my home, my properties, and the hunt club.  I have to admit that this is one of the best purchaes I've made in a long time.  After using this thing for awhile I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of my quads.  This Ranger is a lot safer to drive, you can fit more people in it, and it can hold a lot more stuff.  It's not quite as fast or as fun as a quad but its definitely more practical.

Here I am in the new Ranger with my son Craig.

When Craig and I aren't cruising around on the Ranger we're busy looking out the window for deer.  He's really taken an interest in checking for bucks in the backyard through my Nikon spotting scope.

My buddies Moose Muhammad and John Wright were in town for a few days last week and we took advantage of the great weather and great cover by doing a little pheasant hunting.  Moose doesn't shoot quite as well as he plays football but we still managed to get a few birds!

Here were are with my dogs after a great hunt and a great day in the field.

Unfortunately with how busy things have been at the hunt club, the office, and home I haven't had much of a chance to sneak out looking for sheds this spring.  Justin and I did manage to get out of the office for an hour the other day and I found one pretty nice shed from a few years ago.  It was pretty chewed up and faded but definitely came off a nice buck.  Hopefully he's still running around somewhere!  While we were out we also kicked up a beauty of a buck that still had his rack on.  I would imagine in another few days all the bucks will have dropped their racks and there will still be some antlers left for those of us who didn't get out early.

An old shed, but a shed none the less.

I also found this great rub while I was out - I hope the buck that made this is still alive for next year!
